Percentage Formulas With Examples

  • What is X% of Y? Result = X ÷ 100 × Y. Example: 15% of 80 = 12.
  • X is what % of Y? Result = X ÷ Y × 100. Example: 18 is 36% of 50.
  • X is P% of what? Result = X ÷ (P ÷ 100). Example: 30 is 20% of 150.
  • Percent change from A to B: Result = (B − A) ÷ A × 100. Example: going from 50 to 65 is a 30% increase.

Everyday Uses

Use the first mode to work out a sale discount or sales tax, the second to turn a test score into a percentage, the third to find an original price before a discount, and the fourth to measure price increases, investment returns or growth in any number over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate a discount price?

Use "What is X% of Y?" to find the discount amount, then subtract it from the original price. For example, 25% off $60 is $15, so the sale price is $45.

What is the difference between percent change and percentage points?

Percentage points measure the simple difference between two percentages. Percent change measures the relative change. An interest rate rising from 4% to 5% is a 1 percentage-point increase, but a 25% increase.

Why doesn't a 50% drop followed by a 50% gain get me back to where I started?

Because each percentage is based on a different starting value. $100 down 50% is $50, and $50 up 50% is only $75. You would need a 100% gain to return to $100.
